Taking notes for GCSE Science is very important in understanding the content and
allows to have all the relevant information you have learnt in one place and avoids
last minute cramming during exam time. Writing down notes also helps you learn
and in memory retention. Here are some effective note-taking tips that you can use to help you with your GCSE Science note-taking (applicable to any exam board i.e., AQA, Edexcel, OCR etc.).
Don’t waste time by trying to make your notes aesthetic and perfect. BUT, try make your notes neat and presentable so you can revise off them.
Use colour in your notes to help draw your attention to key information and equations.
Use diagrams when appropriate to help picture an image and take the facts from the image – the brain can memorise a picture better than words.
Use bold titles/underline so you can clearly see what topic it is
Condense your notes i.e., don’t simply copy from the textbook. Read the topic, understand it and then para-phrase the topic using bullet points. Finally, check that you have fully covered the topic using the specification.
Use a range of sources instead of just the generic textbook – this will help to make sure that you’re not just copying out the textbook. This is an example of active learning as you’re using a number of sources to compile information.
Lastly but most importantly, use the GCSE specification (tailored to your exam board e.g., Edexcel, AQA, OCR etc.) to help you write your notes. This way, you’ll never be caught out because you’ll have everything the exam board will require. Also, sometimes your teacher might miss out a specification point – double check.
